Water filter for motorhomes, caravans and boats

You can see what flows into your tank.

When you fill up, the CamperFilter goes in the hose between the tap and the tank. Stage 1 holds back sand, rust and dirt, stage 2 improves quality and smell with activated carbon. The cartridges are transparent – you can see what gets caught.

  • Transparent cartridges
  • Two stages, each can be added separately
  • For hoses with 1/2" connection
  • Activated carbon from coconut shell
  • Minerals stay in the water

Filling up on the road

Every tap is different

At home you know what comes out of the pipes. At a pitch you do not: the tap is at the end of a long pipe, the water may have been standing in it for days, and some countries chlorinate heavily.

Sand and rust in the system

Whatever is flushed out of old pipes ends up in the tank – and from there in the pump, boiler and fittings. That is where it settles. A new pump or a new boiler costs many times as much as a filter.

Chlorine in your coffee

If the water already smells like a swimming pool at the tap, you will taste it later in your coffee, your tea and your soup.

Clear does not mean clean

Many substances cannot be seen in water. In the glass it looks the same as always – what is dissolved in it cannot be seen with the naked eye.

The filter system

Two stages, in this order

The water flows through the filter from bottom to top: first through the strainer, then through the activated carbon. There is a reason for this order.

  1. Tap Water from the pitch, with everything the pipe brings with it
  2. Stage 1: strainer holds back sand, rust and dirt
  3. Stage 2: activated carbon binds chlorine and dissolved substances, fine filter from 10 µm
  4. Tank filtered water, minerals stay in
Transparent sediment filter cartridge with white strainer insert and black screw cap

the coarse filter

Sediment filter

  • holds back sand, rust and dirt – strainer insert with 0.15 mm mesh size
  • protects the pump, boiler and fittings from deposits
  • acts as a pre-filter for the activated carbon so that it does not get clogged with coarse particles

Care: Rinse out the strainer insert from the inside out, with water no hotter than 60 °C. If it no longer comes clean, replacement strainer inserts are available in packs of four.

Cartridge of the activated-carbon filter: black activated-carbon granules behind clear plastic, labelled CamperFilter

with 10-micrometre fine filter

Activated-carbon filter

  • improved smell and quality
  • holds back chlorine, heavy metals, dyes, hormone and drug residues, PFAS, organic hydrocarbons, microplastics, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and partially bacteria
  • the built-in fine filter holds back particles from 10 micrometres
  • minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium stay in the water

Change the filter after 2–3 months from first use, even if the water looks fine and even if you rarely use it. At some point activated carbon is saturated – and you cannot see when.
Storage: Let the activated-carbon filter dry out thoroughly. Then put it in a bag in the fridge.
If the flow drops: Flush the cartridge once against the direction of flow with drinking water – this frees up the fine filter at the end of the cartridge. Pour the flushing water away, not into the tank.

Why the strainer first?

Activated carbon works with a huge, porous surface: one gram of the coconut activated carbon in the CamperFilter has around 1050 m². If the sand reached it first, the pores would soon be blocked. The strainer catches the coarse particles beforehand. This keeps the activated carbon free for what only it can do.

Activated carbon from coconut shell · Iodine number over 1000 mg/g · BET surface area 1050 m²/g · Grain size approx. 1.0 mm

Transparent

See rather than believe

The cartridges are made of clear plastic. After filling up, you can see with your own eyes what the strainer has held back.

When the strainer is full, rinse it out. And if you add the water meter, you can read on the outside how many litres have passed through – so you know when the tank is full without looking inside.

Why CamperFilter

Reasons for the CamperFilter

Inexpensive to start with and to run

You start with the sediment filter and add the activated carbon if you wish. Replacement cartridges and strainer inserts cost little – which matters, because the activated carbon is replaced every few months.

Modular, not a black box

Each stage is a separate cartridge with a screw cap. You only replace what is used up, not the whole unit.

Fits your hoses

Connections for 1/2-inch hoses with quick-release coupling, plus a regulating tap and two sealing caps so that nothing gets in while it is stowed away.

Minerals stay

Activated carbon does not remove minerals. Magnesium, calcium and potassium stay in the water – it tastes of water, not of nothing.

Hangs where there is room

While you fill up, a suction holder keeps the filter on the vehicle wall; on hammered-finish and Raptor paint, the ClingCup holder does. Afterwards, pour it out and hang it up in the rear garage.

Developed by campers

CamperStation develops and sells camping accessories itself. If you have a question, you get the answer from the people who built the filter.

To be honest

What it can do – and what it cannot

A filter is a tool, not a miracle cure. So that you know where you stand:

What the CamperFilter can do

  • hold back sand, rust and dirt before they get into the tank, pump and boiler
  • improve smell and taste, for example with heavily chlorinated water
  • with activated carbon, hold back the substances listed under stage 2 above
  • show you what gets caught – the cartridges are transparent

What it cannot do

  • make water germ-free. The activated carbon only partially holds back bacteria.
  • turn water of unknown origin into drinking water. Fill up with water that is designated as drinking water.
  • replace the care of the tank and pipes. They still need regular cleaning.
  • work without loss of pressure. The water flows more slowly through the fine activated carbon, noticeably so if the pressure at the tap is low.

Customer reviews

What customers write

„A water filter was also on our wish list, but the other filters are rather expensive. […] We took it to Lake Garda; there the water from the tap smelled quite strongly of chlorine, after the water filter the smell was completely gone […]“

Eduard · 21 May 2025 · CamperFilter Aktiv Practical

„The holder and the hose are very practical, the meter helps you know from the outside when there is enough in the tank. Incredible what gets caught in the sediment filter after a short time. […] Good system with reasonable costs for replacing the cartridges.“

What customers ask us

Questions

Where does the CamperFilter go?
In the hose when you fill up, between the tap and the tank – the CamperFilter is an inline fill filter. It is not permanently installed: you attach it to the vehicle wall with the holder, fill up and then stow it away again.
Why does the sediment filter come before the activated carbon?
The strainer catches sand, rust and coarse dirt before they reach the activated carbon. Otherwise its fine pores would clog and it could no longer hold back what it is there for. That is why the water flows from bottom to top: first stage 1, then stage 2.
Which set should I choose?
That depends on three things: whether the coarse filter is enough for you or you also want the activated carbon, whether your vehicle wall is smooth or textured, and whether you would like a water meter. Further up this page you can answer the three questions with a few clicks and you will be shown the right set.
How often do I need to change the cartridges?
The activated carbon after 2–3 months from first use – even if the water looks fine and even if you rarely use it. Rinse out the strainer insert of the sediment stage from the inside out (with water no hotter than 60 °C) until it no longer comes clean; replacement strainer inserts are then available in packs of four.
Why does the water flow more slowly with the filter?
The activated carbon is finely granulated, and the water needs time to get through – that is part of the filtering. How fast it flows depends mainly on the pressure at the tap, and that is not good at every campsite. Long or narrow supply hoses also slow it down. Install the filter vertically and pay attention to the direction of flow, otherwise air bubbles will be trapped.
The flow has got worse over time – what can I do?
Work through these steps in order:
  1. Rinse the strainer of the sediment stage from the inside out, with water no hotter than 60 °C.
  2. Flush the activated-carbon cartridge once against the direction of flow with drinking water, i.e. from the outlet to the inlet. The 10 µm fine filter sits at the end of the cartridge in the direction of flow; flushing it backwards loosens whatever has settled there. Pour the flushing water away – do not let it run into the tank – and then flush briefly in the normal direction until the water runs clear.
  3. Check that the filter hangs vertically and that the direction of flow is correct.
  4. If the activated carbon is older than 2–3 months, change the cartridge. Flushing loosens trapped particles, but it does not restore the filtering effect of the activated carbon.
If none of this helps, write to us: which set you have, how long the cartridge has been in use and how long filling up takes now.
Does the filter make the water germ-free?
No. The activated carbon only partially holds back bacteria; the CamperFilter is not a disinfection device. Fill up with water that is designated as drinking water, and keep cleaning the tank and pipes regularly.
Do the minerals stay in the water?
Yes. Activated carbon does not remove minerals and trace elements – magnesium, calcium and potassium stay in the water.
Will the filter fit my hose?
The CamperFilter is built for hose systems with 1/2" connections; the hose connectors have a 3/4" thread and take a 1/2" hose. For the filler neck there are matching WAFA tank adapters that the hose simply clicks onto.
Which holder fits my vehicle wall?
For smooth surfaces, the suction holder that comes with the Practical and Tubeless sets and is also available separately. For hammered-finish surfaces and Raptor paint, the ClingCup holder from the SystemSet and the MaxiSet, also available separately. In both cases the surface should be clean.
How do I store the filter between trips?
After filling up, pour out the water and hang the filter up to dry in the rear garage. Put the protective caps on later. The cartridges may dry out. Flush briefly before the next use. Empty completely before frost, because freezing water expands. For longer storage of the activated-carbon filter in the fridge: let it dry out thoroughly and put it in a bag.
Is the hose supplied suitable for drinking water?
Yes, there is a test certificate for the drinking-water hose in our sets.
Which WaterBob version goes with the CamperFilter?
The one with the 1.4-bar pump. A filter costs pressure; with the stronger pump the water flows steadily through both stages. More at waterbob.de.
Where can I buy the CamperFilter?
In the CamperStation shop (in German). All sets, replacement cartridges and accessories are there: camperstation.de/CamperFilter. Free shipping within the EU from €40.
